HAT-P-51 b: A Jupiter-Like World Around a Sun-Like Star

HAT-P-51 is a G7 star located 1440 light-years away, with one known planet in orbit. The host star is estimated to be 8.2 billion years old, with a mass of 0.976 solar masses and a radius of 1.04 solar radii, making it slightly less massive and slightly larger than the Sun. Its temperature is 5450 K, cooler than the Sun's.

The system's sole known planet, HAT-P-51 b, was discovered in 2015 by the transit method, which detects the small dip in a star's brightness when a planet passes in front of it. This Jupiter-like planet has a mass of 97.6 Earth masses and a radius of 13.5 Earth radii, both larger than Earth's corresponding values. Its mean density is 0.218 g/cm³, which is 0.0396 times Earth's. HAT-P-51 b completes one orbit in 4.22 days, a short period that places it close to its host star.
