HAT-P-34 and Its Jupiter-Like Planet

HAT-P-34 is a star 813 light-years from Earth. Its reported mass estimate is 1.34 solar masses, its reported radius estimate is 1.57 solar radii, and its reported temperature is 6510 K. Its reported mass estimate is larger than the Sun's, its reported radius estimate is larger than the Sun's, and its reported temperature is hotter than the Sun's.

One planet is known to orbit this host: HAT-P-34 b, a Jupiter-like planet discovered by transit in 2011. A transit occurs when a planet passes in front of its star from our viewpoint, causing a small dip in observed brightness; repeated dips help establish orbital periods. HAT-P-34 b's orbital period is 5.45 days. Its reported radius estimate is 13.4 Earth radii and is larger than Earth's, while its mass estimate is 1060 Earth masses and is larger than Earth's. That mass estimate is roughly 3.33 times Jupiter's mass. HAT-P-34 b's mean density is 2.41 g/cm³, 0.438 times Earth's.
