HAT-P-3 b: A Jupiter-Like World Around a Cool Star

HAT-P-3 is a K-type star located 439 light-years away. Its reported mass estimate is 0.936 solar masses and its reported radius estimate is 0.824 solar radii, both smaller than the Sun's. The star's reported temperature is 5190 K, cooler than the Sun's, and its age is 0.4 billion years. One planet orbits this host.

That planet is HAT-P-3 b, a Jupiter-like world discovered in 2007 by the transit method, in which a planet passes in front of its star from our viewpoint and causes a small dip in observed brightness. It has a mass of 207 Earth masses and a radius of 10.5 Earth radii, both larger than Earth's. Its orbital period is 2.9 days, and its mean density is 0.973 g/cm³, 0.177 times Earth's.
