GJ 740 is an M1.0 V star, a small, cool red dwarf, located 36.2 light-years away. It has a reported mass of 0.58 solar masses and a radius of 0.56 solar radii, both smaller than the Sun's corresponding values. Its temperature is 3910 K, cooler than the Sun's. One planet is known to orbit this host.
That planet, GJ 740 b, was discovered in 2021 using the radial velocity method, which measures the wobble a planet's gravity induces in its star's motion. Its minimum mass is 2.96 Earth masses, larger than Earth's, meaning the true mass is at least this much. The planet completes one orbit in 2.38 days.
