GJ 3988 is an M4.5 V star, a small, cool red dwarf, located 32.3 light-years away. Its mass is 0.184 solar masses and its radius is 0.197 solar radii, both smaller than the Sun's corresponding values. Its temperature is 3270 K, cooler than the Sun's. One planet has been found orbiting this star.
That planet, GJ 3988 b, was discovered in 2023 using the radial velocity method, which detects the wobble a planet's gravity induces in its star's motion; repeated wobbles reveal the planet and its orbital period. GJ 3988 b has a minimum mass of 3.69 Earth masses, larger than Earth's, meaning its true mass is at least this value. Its orbital period is 6.94 days, so it completes one orbit in under a week.
