GJ 229 is an M1.5V star, a small, cool red dwarf, located 18.8 light-years from Earth. Its reported mass is 0.48 solar masses and its reported radius is 0.46 solar radii, both smaller than the Sun's corresponding values. Its reported temperature of 3710 K is cooler than the Sun's. Two planets have been reported orbiting this host.
Both planets were found using the radial velocity method, which detects the wobble a planet's gravity induces in its star's motion. GJ 229 A c was discovered in 2020. Its minimum mass is 8.58 Earth masses, and its orbital period is 122 days. GJ 229 b was discovered in 2014, with a minimum mass of 14.9 Earth masses and an orbital period of 579 days. Each planet's minimum mass is larger than Earth's. Among the listed planets, GJ 229 A c has the shortest orbital period and the smallest minimum mass, while GJ 229 b has the longest orbital period and the largest minimum mass.
