GJ 1214 and Its Neptune-Like Planet

GJ 1214 is an M4 V star, an M-type dwarf that is small and cool compared with the Sun. It lies 47.8 light-years away. Its mass is 0.178 solar masses, its radius is 0.215 solar radii, and its temperature is 3250 K; all three estimates fall below the corresponding solar values. One known planet orbits this star.

That planet, GJ 1214 b, was discovered in 2009 by the transit method, in which a planet passes in front of its star from our viewpoint and causes a small dip in observed brightness. Repeated dips help establish its orbital period of 1.58 days. Its radius is 2.73 Earth radii, which is larger than Earth's and places it in the Neptune-like size class, a grouping that reaches four times Earth's radius. Its mass is 8.41 Earth masses, larger than Earth's, and its mean density is 2.27 g/cm³, 0.412 times Earth's.
