G 9-40: A Nearby Red Dwarf and Its Super-Earth

G 9-40 is an M2.5 V star, a small, cool red dwarf with one known planet. It lies 91.1 light-years away and is 9.9 billion years old. Its mass is 0.29 solar masses and its radius is 0.307 solar radii, both smaller than the Sun's. Its temperature of 3350 K is cooler than the Sun's.

The planet, G 9-40 b, was discovered in 2019 by the transit method, in which a planet passing in front of its star causes a small dip in observed brightness. It is classified as a Super-Earth. Its radius is 1.9 Earth radii, larger than Earth's, and its mass is 4 Earth masses, also larger than Earth's. Its mean density is 3.21 g/cm³, 0.583 times Earth's. G 9-40 b completes an orbit around its star every 5.75 days.
