G 261-6 is an M-type dwarf, a small, cool red star, lying 34.7 light-years away. Its spectral type is M5.5 V. The star has a mass of 0.125 solar masses and a radius of 0.153 solar radii, both smaller than the Sun's, and a temperature of 2910 K, cooler than the Sun's. Just one planet is known to orbit this host.
That planet, G 261-6 b, was found by the radial velocity method, which detects the wobble a planet's gravity induces in its star's motion; repeated wobbles reveal the planet and its orbital period. It was discovered in 2025. Its minimum mass is 1.37 Earth masses, a lower bound on its true mass and larger than Earth's. It completes one orbit every 5.45 days.
