CI Tau: A Very Young Star With a Massive Minimum-Mass Planet

CI Tau is a K7 star located 515 light-years away. It is very young, with an age of 0.0025 billion years, and its mass is 0.9 solar masses, a figure smaller than the Sun's. One planet orbits this host.

That planet is CI Tau c, discovered in 2024 by the radial velocity method, which tracks the wobble a planet's gravity induces in its star's motion. Its minimum mass is 1140 Earth masses, a lower bound on its true mass and larger than Earth's. That minimum mass is roughly 3.6 times Jupiter's mass. CI Tau c completes an orbit in 25.2 days.
