17 Sco b: A Giant Planet Orbiting a Cool Giant Star

17 Sco is a star 408 light-years away with one known planet. Its spectral type, K3 III, places it among the cooler, more evolved stars. The star is 5.13 billion years old, has a mass of 1.22 solar masses, and a radius of 25.9 solar radii, making it both more massive and larger than the Sun. Its temperature of 4160 K is cooler than the Sun's.

The single planet, 17 Sco b, was discovered in 2020 using the radial velocity method, which detects the wobble a planet's gravity induces in its star's motion. It has a minimum mass of 1370 Earth masses, or roughly 4.32 times Jupiter's mass, and orbits its star every 578 days.
