WASP-54 b: A Jupiter-Like World Orbiting an F9 Star

WASP-54 is a star 820 light-years away with a spectral type of F9. Its mass is 1.21 solar masses, its radius is 1.83 solar radii, and its temperature is 6100 K. It is estimated to be 6.3 billion years old. One planet has been found orbiting this host.

That planet is WASP-54 b, discovered in 2012 by the transit method, in which a planet passing in front of its star from our viewpoint causes a small dip in observed brightness. Repeated dips help establish orbital periods. WASP-54 b is a Jupiter-like planet, a size class that exceeds 4 times Earth's radius. Its radius is 17.7 Earth radii and its mass is 188 Earth masses, both larger than Earth's corresponding values. Its mean density is 0.186 g/cm³, 0.0338 times Earth's. WASP-54 b completes an orbit every 3.69 days.
