WASP-117 b: A Jupiter-Like World Orbiting an F9 Star

WASP-117 is a single-star system 515 light-years away, and its host star is a spectral type F9 star with a mass of 1.13 solar masses and a radius of 1.17 solar radii. At 6040 K, it is hotter than the Sun, and it is estimated to be 4.6 billion years old. One planet orbits this host.

That planet is WASP-117 b, discovered in 2014 by the transit method, in which a planet passes in front of its star from our viewpoint and causes a small dip in observed brightness. The planet orbits every 10 days. Its radius of 11.9 Earth radii makes it a Jupiter-like planet, a class defined by radii exceeding 4 times Earth's. WASP-117 b's reported radius estimate is larger than Earth's, and its reported mass estimate of 95.3 Earth masses is larger than Earth's as well. Its mean density is 0.313 g/cm³, 0.0568 times Earth's.
