TOI-540 is a small, cool red dwarf of spectral type M V, located 45.7 light-years from us. Its mass is 0.159 solar masses, its radius 0.19 solar radii, and its temperature 3220 K, making it less massive, smaller, and cooler than the Sun. The star has an age of 1.1 billion years, and it hosts exactly one known planet.
That planet, TOI-540 b, is a Sub-Earth, a size class for worlds smaller than Earth in radius. It was found in 2020 by the transit method, in which a planet passing in front of its star dims the starlight slightly; repeated dips reveal the orbital period. TOI-540 b circles its host every 1.24 days and has a radius of 0.903 Earth radii, smaller than Earth's.
