TOI-5218: A Cool, Older Star and Its Jupiter-Like Planet

TOI-5218 is a star located 1230 light-years away, with a reported mass of 0.739 solar masses and a radius of 0.708 solar radii. Its reported temperature is 4230 K, and its age is 6.7 billion years. One planet orbits this host.

That planet, TOI-5218 b, was discovered in 2024 by the transit method, in which a planet passes in front of its star from our viewpoint and causes a small dip in observed brightness. Repeated dips help establish orbital periods. TOI-5218 b completes one orbit every 4.29 days.

TOI-5218 b is classified as Jupiter-like, a size class for planets whose radius exceeds four times Earth's. Its reported radius estimate is 9.86 Earth radii, larger than Earth's. The planet's mass is reported as an upper limit of 657 Earth masses, a bound rather than an exact value.
