TOI-3261 b: A Close-In Neptune Orbiting a Cool Dwarf

TOI-3261 is a K-type star 979 light-years away. The star is cooler than the Sun, with a spectral type of K1.5+/-1 and a temperature of 5070 K. Its mass is 0.861 solar masses and its radius is 0.849 solar radii, both smaller than the Sun's. The star is also old for a planetary system, with an age of 6.5 billion years. One planet is known to orbit it.

That planet, TOI-3261 b, was discovered in 2024 by the transit method, which detects the small dip in a star's brightness when a planet crosses in front of it. Classified as Neptune-like, TOI-3261 b has a radius of 3.82 Earth radii, larger than Earth's, and a mass of 30.3 Earth masses, also larger than Earth's. Its mean density is 3 g/cm³, 0.544 times Earth's. The planet completes an orbit in just 0.883 days, making it one of the shortest-period Neptune-like worlds known.
