POTS-1: A Distant K-Type Dwarf and Its Giant Planet

POTS-1 is a K5 V star located 2440 light-years away. This spectral type indicates a main-sequence dwarf somewhat cooler and redder than the Sun. The star has a mass of 0.695 solar masses and a radius of 0.588 solar radii, with a temperature of 4400 K. These measurements show a star less massive, smaller, and cooler than the Sun. POTS-1 hosts one known planet.

That planet, POTS-1 b, was discovered in 2013 using the transit method. During a transit, a planet passes in front of its star from our viewpoint, causing a small dip in observed brightness. POTS-1 b is classified as Jupiter-like, a size class for planets exceeding four times Earth's radius. Its radius is 10.5 Earth radii, larger than Earth's. The planet completes an orbit in 3.16 days. Its mass is 734 Earth masses, which is larger than Earth's and roughly 2.31 times Jupiter's mass. POTS-1 b has a mean density of 3.45 g/cm³, 0.626 times Earth's.
