OGLE2-TR-L9 b: A Transiting Giant in a Distant System

OGLE2-TR-L9 is a star 5310 light-years away with a single known planet. The host star is 1 billion years old and has a mass of 1.42 solar masses and a radius of 1.5 solar radii, both larger than the Sun's. Its temperature of 6930 K is hotter than the Sun's.

The planet OGLE2-TR-L9 b was discovered in 2008 by the transit method, in which a planet passes in front of its star from our viewpoint and causes a small dip in observed brightness. It is a Jupiter-like planet, a size class for worlds exceeding 4 times Earth's radius. Its radius of 18 Earth radii is larger than Earth's. Its mass of 1430 Earth masses is also larger than Earth's and roughly 4.5 times Jupiter's mass. It completes an orbit every 2.49 days, and its mean density is 1.34 g/cm³, 0.243 times Earth's.
