NY Vir and Its Two Circumbinary Planets

NY Vir is a binary star system 1770 light-years away, and two known planets orbit both stars together. Both planets are circumbinary, meaning each orbits the pair rather than a single star.

The host star has a mass of 0.459 solar masses and a radius of 0.151 solar radii, both smaller than the Sun's corresponding values. Its temperature is 32800 K, hotter than the Sun's. These figures describe the host star alone, not the companion.

NY Vir b was discovered in 2011 by Eclipse Timing Variations. It has a minimum mass of 845 Earth masses, roughly 2.66 times Jupiter's mass, and an orbital period of 3160 days. NY Vir c was discovered in 2019 by the same method. Its minimum mass is 1760 Earth masses, roughly 5.54 times Jupiter's mass, and its orbital period is 8800 days. Both minimum masses are larger than Earth's; minimum mass is a lower bound on a planet's true mass.
