LP 890-9 and Its Two Known Planets

LP 890-9 is an M6 V star, making it a small, cool red dwarf, located 106 light-years from Earth. The star's reported mass estimate is 0.118 solar masses, smaller than the Sun's, and its reported radius estimate is 0.156 solar radii, also smaller than the Sun's. Its reported temperature of 2850 K is cooler than the Sun's, and its age is 7.2 billion years.

Two planets are known to orbit this host. Both were discovered in 2022 by the transit method, in which a planet passes in front of its star from our viewpoint and causes a small dip in observed brightness. Both are classified as Earth-like, meaning their radii stay within 1.5 times Earth's radius. LP 890-9 b has a radius of 1.32 Earth radii, larger than Earth's, and a reported upper limit of 13.2 Earth masses. Its orbital period, or year, is 2.73 days, the shortest among the listed planets. LP 890-9 c has a radius of 1.37 Earth radii, larger than Earth's and the largest among the listed planets, along with a reported upper limit of 25.3 Earth masses. Its orbital period is 8.46 days, the longest among the listed planets.
