Kepler-99 b: A Nearby Earth-Like World

Kepler-99 is a star located 680 light-years away. It has 0.79 solar masses and 0.73 solar radii, both smaller than the Sun's corresponding values, and a temperature of 4780 K, which is cooler than the Sun's. The star is 1.47 billion years old. One planet is known to orbit this host.

That planet, Kepler-99 b, is classified as Earth-like. It was discovered by the transit method, in which a planet passes in front of its star from our viewpoint and causes a small dip in observed brightness, with repeated dips helping to establish its orbital period. Kepler-99 b completes an orbit every 4.6 days. Its radius is 1.48 Earth radii, larger than Earth's, and its mass is 6.15 Earth masses, also larger than Earth's.
