Kepler-940 b: A Neptune-like World in a Distant System

Kepler-940 is a star located 4110 light-years away, and it hosts exactly one known planet. The host star is 3.63 billion years old and has a mass of 0.97 solar masses, a radius of 0.96 solar radii, and a temperature of 5770 K. These stellar measurements describe the star itself rather than the wider system.

The planet Kepler-940 b was discovered in 2016 by the transit method, in which a planet passes in front of its star from our viewpoint and causes a small dip in observed brightness. Kepler-940 b completes one orbit in 59.6 days, and its radius is 3.34 Earth radii. That radius estimate is larger than Earth's. As a Neptune-like planet, it falls within a size class that reaches 4 times Earth's radius.

Kepler-940 b is the only planet known to orbit this host, so the system's known planetary inventory consists of this single Neptune-like world.
