Kepler-859 and Its Neptune-Like Planet

Kepler-859 is a star 2740 light-years away with a mass of 0.81 solar masses and a radius of 0.77 solar radii. Its reported mass and radius estimates are both smaller than the Sun's. The star is 4.57 billion years old and has a temperature of 5020 K, cooler than the Sun's. One planet orbits this host.

That planet, Kepler-859 b, is Neptune-like, meaning its radius reaches up to four times Earth's. Discovered by transit in 2016, it has a radius of 3.09 Earth radii, larger than Earth's, and an orbital period of 20.4 days. A transit occurs when a planet passes in front of its star from our viewpoint, causing a small dip in observed brightness; repeated dips help establish orbital periods.
