Kepler-839 b: A Neptune-like World in a Distant System

Kepler-839 is a star located 3080 light-years away. It has 1.22 solar masses and a radius of 1.31 solar radii, making it larger than the Sun in both mass and radius. Its temperature is 6060 K, hotter than the Sun's. The star is 2.82 billion years old. One planet orbits this host.

That planet is Kepler-839 b, a Neptune-like world discovered in 2016 by the transit method, in which a planet passes in front of its star from our viewpoint and causes a small dip in observed brightness. Repeated dips help establish orbital periods. Kepler-839 b completes an orbit every 37.8 days and has a radius of 2.57 Earth radii, larger than Earth's. As a Neptune-like planet, it falls within the size class that reaches 4 times Earth's radius.
