Kepler-796 b: A Close-In Earth-Like World

Kepler-796 is a star located 2670 light-years away, with an age of 11.8 billion years. Its reported mass estimate is 0.93 solar masses, smaller than the Sun's, and its radius is 1.09 solar radii. The star's reported temperature is 5480 K, cooler than the Sun's. One planet orbits this host.

That planet is Kepler-796 b, an Earth-like world discovered by transit in 2016. A transit occurs when a planet passes in front of its star from our viewpoint, causing a small dip in observed brightness. Kepler-796 b completes an orbit every 6.4 days and has a radius of 1.3 Earth radii, larger than Earth's. Its size class compares radius with Earth's, and at 1.3 Earth radii it falls within the Earth-like range, which stays within 1.5 times Earth's radius.
