Kepler-779 b: A Sub-Earth in a Distant System

Kepler-779 is a star located 924 light-years away, and it hosts one known planet, Kepler-779 b. The host star is estimated to be 3.89 billion years old, with a mass of 0.46 solar masses and a radius of 0.44 solar radii. Its temperature is 3800 K. Compared with the Sun, the star's reported mass and radius estimates are smaller, and its reported temperature is cooler.

The system's only known planet, Kepler-779 b, was discovered in 2016 by the transit method, in which a planet passes in front of its star from our viewpoint and causes a small dip in observed brightness. Repeated dips help establish orbital periods. Kepler-779 b completes an orbit every 7.1 days. Its radius is 0.92 Earth radii, and it is classified as a Sub-Earth, a size class for planets smaller than Earth. Its reported radius estimate is smaller than Earth's.
