Kepler-709 and Its Neptune-Like Planet

Kepler-709 is a star located 2170 light-years away, and it hosts one known planet. The star is estimated to be 4.9 billion years old, with a mass of 0.8 solar masses and a radius of 0.77 solar radii. Its temperature is 5070 K. The star's reported mass and radius estimates are smaller than the Sun's, and its reported temperature is cooler than the Sun's.

The planet Kepler-709 b was discovered in 2016 by the transit method, in which a planet passes in front of its star from our viewpoint and causes a small dip in observed brightness. Repeated dips help establish orbital periods. Kepler-709 b completes an orbit every 16.1 days, and its radius is 2.92 Earth radii. That reported radius estimate is larger than Earth's. Kepler-709 b is classified as Neptune-like, a size class that reaches 4 times Earth's radius.
