Kepler-542 b: A Super-Earth Orbiting a Single Star

Kepler-542 is a star 1420 light-years away with a single known planet, Kepler-542 b. The host star is 4.57 billion years old, has a mass of 0.93 solar masses, a radius of 0.9 solar radii, and a temperature of 5530 K. Its mass and radius are each a smaller value than the Sun's, and its temperature is cooler than the Sun's.

Kepler-542 b was discovered in 2016 by the transit method, in which a planet passes in front of its star from our viewpoint and causes a small dip in observed brightness; repeated dips help establish orbital periods. The planet completes one orbit every 13.1 days. With a radius of 1.57 Earth radii, it is larger than Earth and classified as a Super-Earth, a size class that reaches 2.5 times Earth's radius.
