Kepler-413 b: A Circumbinary Planet in a Two-Star System

Kepler-413 is a binary star system 2760 light-years away. Its host star has a mass of 0.82 solar masses, a radius of 0.776 solar radii, and a temperature of 4700 K, all smaller or cooler than the Sun's corresponding values. One planet orbits this hostname.

That planet is Kepler-413 b, a Jupiter-like world discovered by transit in 2014. A transit occurs when a planet passes in front of its star from our viewpoint, causing a small dip in observed brightness; repeated dips help establish orbital periods. Kepler-413 b is circumbinary, meaning it orbits both stars of the binary system rather than one star alone. It completes an orbit every 66.3 days. Its radius is 4.35 Earth radii, larger than Earth's, and its mass is 67 Earth masses, also larger than Earth's. Its mean density is 4.49 g/cm³, 0.816 times Earth's.
