Kepler-396: A Distant Star With Two Known Worlds

Kepler-396 is a star located 730 light-years away. It is 0.97 solar masses and 0.95 solar radii, with a temperature of 5650 K and an age of 4.37 billion years. Its reported temperature is cooler than the Sun's. Two planets are known to orbit this host.

Kepler-396 b is a Neptune-like planet discovered by transit in 2013. It has a mass of 75.5 Earth masses, a radius of 3.5 Earth radii, and an orbital period of 43 days. Its mean density is 9.7 g/cm³, 1.76 times Earth's.

Kepler-396 c is a Jupiter-like planet, also discovered by transit in 2013. It has a mass of 17.9 Earth masses, a radius of 5.3 Earth radii, and an orbital period of 88.5 days. Its mean density is 0.662 g/cm³, 0.12 times Earth's.

Both planets' reported radius estimates are larger than Earth's, and both reported mass estimates are larger than Earth's. Among the listed planets, Kepler-396 b has the shortest year, at 43 days, and Kepler-396 c has the longest, at 88.5 days. Kepler-396 b also has the smallest radius, while Kepler-396 c has the largest. Among the listed planets, Kepler-396 c has the smallest reported mass, and Kepler-396 b has the largest.
