Kepler-16 b: A Circumbinary World

Kepler-16 is a binary star system 245 light-years away. The host star has a reported mass of 0.63 solar masses, a radius of 0.769 solar radii, and a temperature of 4020 K, all smaller or cooler than the Sun.

One planet orbits this host: Kepler-16 b, a Jupiter-like planet discovered by transit in 2011. A transit occurs when a planet passes in front of its star from our viewpoint, causing a small dip in observed brightness. Kepler-16 b is circumbinary, meaning it orbits both stars of the binary system rather than one star alone. Its mass is 106 Earth masses, its radius is 8.45 Earth radii, and its orbital period is 229 days. Its mean density is 0.967 g/cm³, 0.175 times Earth's. Both its reported mass and radius estimates are larger than Earth's.
