Kepler-1235 b: A Sub-Earth World in a Distant System

Kepler-1235 is a star 1760 light-years away with one known planet. The host star is 4.57 billion years old and has a mass of 0.93 solar masses, a radius of 0.9 solar radii, and a temperature of 5540 K. Its reported mass estimate is smaller than the Sun's, and its reported temperature is cooler than the Sun's.

The planet Kepler-1235 b was discovered in 2016 by the transit method. A transit occurs when a planet passes in front of its star from our viewpoint, causing a small dip in observed brightness, and repeated dips help establish orbital periods. Kepler-1235 b completes an orbit in 4.16 days.

Kepler-1235 b is classified as a Sub-Earth, a size class for planets smaller than Earth. Its radius is 0.79 Earth radii, and its reported radius estimate is smaller than Earth's. Earth radii compare radius, not volume.
