Kepler-1167: A Cool, Older Star with a Super-Earth

Kepler-1167 is a star located 2680 light-years away, and it hosts one known planet. The star is estimated to be 4.27 billion years old, with a mass of 0.79 solar masses and radius of 0.75 solar radii. Its reported temperature is 4970 K. Compared with the Sun, the star's reported mass and radius estimates are smaller, and its reported temperature is cooler.

The planet, Kepler-1167 b, was discovered in 2016 using the transit method, in which a planet passes in front of its star from our viewpoint and causes a small dip in observed brightness. Repeated dips help establish orbital periods. Kepler-1167 b completes an orbit in 1 day. It is classified as a Super-Earth, a size class that reaches 2.5 times Earth's radius, and its reported radius estimate is 1.71 Earth radii, larger than Earth's.
