Kepler-1138 and Its Super-Earth

Kepler-1138 is a star located 2850 light-years away. It is 4.37 billion years old, has a mass of 0.95 solar masses, a radius of 0.92 solar radii, and a temperature of 5580 K. Its reported mass estimate is smaller than the Sun's, and its reported temperature is cooler than the Sun's. One known planet orbits this host.

That planet is Kepler-1138 b, a Super-Earth discovered in 2016 by the transit method, in which a planet passes in front of its star from our viewpoint and causes a small dip in observed brightness. Repeated dips help establish orbital periods. Kepler-1138 b completes an orbit every 3.17 days and has a radius of 1.7 Earth radii. Its reported radius estimate is larger than Earth's. A Super-Earth reaches 2.5 times Earth's radius, so the classification describes the planet's size rather than its composition.
