Kepler-1117 b: An Earth-Like World in a Distant System

Kepler-1117 is a star located 1,850 light-years away. It hosts one planet. The star is 4.27 billion years old and has a mass of 0.95 solar masses, a radius of 0.93 solar radii, and a temperature of 5610 K. Its reported mass estimate is smaller than the Sun's, and its reported temperature is cooler than the Sun's.

The planet Kepler-1117 b was discovered in 2016 by the transit method, in which a planet passes in front of its star from our viewpoint and causes a small dip in observed brightness. Repeated dips help establish orbital periods. Kepler-1117 b completes an orbit every 4.79 days and has a radius of 1.11 Earth radii. Its reported radius estimate is larger than Earth's. Classified as Earth-like, it falls within the size class that stays within 1.5 times Earth's radius.
