K2-287 b: A Giant Planet Orbiting Its Star

K2-287 is a star located 516 light-years from Earth. It is 6.6 billion years old and has a mass of 1.03 solar masses and a radius of 1.1 solar radii, which is larger than the Sun's. Its temperature of 5630 K is cooler than the Sun's. One planet orbits this star.

That planet, K2-287 b, was discovered in 2018 by the transit method, in which a planet passes in front of its star from our viewpoint and causes a small dip in observed brightness. K2-287 b is a Jupiter-like planet, a size class for worlds exceeding 4 times Earth's radius. Its radius of 9.49 Earth radii is larger than Earth's, and its mass of 100 Earth masses is also larger than Earth's. It completes one orbit every 14.9 days.

K2-287 b has a mean density of 0.645 g/cm³, which is 0.117 times Earth's.
