K2-122: A Cool Dwarf and Its Close-In Planet

K2-122 is a star system 235 light-years away. Its host star is an M0 spectral type, a small, cool red dwarf with a reported mass estimate of 0.644 solar masses, a reported radius estimate of 0.612 solar radii, and a temperature of 3900 K. All three measurements are smaller or cooler than the Sun's corresponding values. One known planet orbits this star.

That planet, K2-122 b, was discovered in 2017 by the transit method, in which a planet passing in front of its star from our viewpoint causes a small dip in observed brightness. It is classified as Earth-like, meaning its radius stays within 1.5 times Earth's radius, and its reported radius estimate of 1.16 Earth radii is indeed larger than Earth's. K2-122 b completes one orbit in 2.22 days.
