BEBOP-3 b: A Circumbinary World

BEBOP-3 is a binary star system 388 light-years away. Its host star has a mass of 1.08 solar masses, a radius of 1.41 solar radii, and a temperature of 6030 K, all larger or hotter than the Sun's corresponding values. One planet orbits this hostname.

That planet, BEBOP-3 b, is circumbinary, meaning it orbits both stars of the binary system rather than one star alone. It was discovered in 2025 using the radial velocity method, which measures the wobble a planet's gravity induces in its star's motion, with repeated wobbles revealing the planet and its orbital period. BEBOP-3 b has a minimum mass of 177 Earth masses, a lower bound on its true mass that is larger than Earth's mass. Its orbital period is 547 days.
