BD+20 274 b: A Giant Planet Orbiting a Cool, Distant Star

BD+20 274 is a star located 4310 light-years away, and it hosts one known planet. The star is a K5 III type with a mass of 0.8 solar masses and a radius of 17.3 solar radii, making its reported radius estimate larger than the Sun's. Its temperature is 4300 K, which is cooler than the Sun's.

The planet BD+20 274 b was discovered in 2012 using the radial velocity method, which measures the wobble a planet's gravity induces in its star's motion; repeated wobbles reveal the planet and its orbital period. BD+20 274 b has a minimum mass of 1330 Earth masses, a lower bound on its true mass. This minimum mass is larger than Earth's and is roughly 4.2 times Jupiter's mass. The planet completes one orbit in 578 days.
