A Giant Star and Its Single Known Planet

omicron Ursae Majoris, or omi UMa, is a star 179 light-years away with a spectral type of G4 II-III. It has a mass of 2.72 solar masses, a radius of 13.8 solar radii, and a temperature of 5080 K. Its mass and radius estimates are larger than the Sun's, while its reported temperature is cooler.

One known planet, omi UMa b, orbits this host. It was discovered in 2012 using the radial velocity method, which detects the wobble a planet's gravity induces in its star's motion. The planet has a minimum mass of 1160 Earth masses, a lower bound on its true mass and roughly 3.65 times Jupiter's mass. Its minimum mass is larger than Earth's, and it completes one orbit every 1570 days.
