WASP-188 b: A Jupiter-like World in a Distant System

WASP-188 is a star located 2200 light-years away. It has a mass of 1.5 solar masses and a radius of 1.83 solar radii, with a temperature of 6850 K. Each of these reported estimates is larger or hotter than the Sun's corresponding value.

One planet orbits this host: WASP-188 b. It is a Jupiter-like planet, a size class for worlds exceeding 4 times Earth's radius. Its radius of 14.8 Earth radii is larger than Earth's, and its mass estimate of 459 Earth masses is larger than Earth's as well, roughly 1.44 times Jupiter's mass. WASP-188 b was discovered by transit, the method in which a planet passes in front of its star from our viewpoint and causes a small dip in observed brightness. Its orbital period is 5.75 days.

The planet's mean density is 0.777 g/cm³, 0.141 times Earth's.
