WASP-18: A Hot Star With a Closely Orbiting Giant

WASP-18 is a star system 403 light-years away. The host star is of spectral type F6 IV-V, and it has an age of 1.57 billion years, a mass of 1.29 solar masses, a radius of 1.32 solar radii, and a temperature of 6430 K. Its mass and radius are larger than the Sun's, and its temperature is hotter than the Sun's. One planet has been identified orbiting this star.

That planet is WASP-18 b, a Jupiter-like world discovered by the transit method in 2009. It has a mass of 3240 Earth masses, which is roughly 10.2 times Jupiter's mass and larger than Earth's mass. Its radius is 13.9 Earth radii, larger than Earth's radius, and its mean density is 6.65 g/cm³, 1.21 times Earth's. WASP-18 b completes an orbit in just 0.941 days.
