WASP-13 b: A Jupiter-like World in a Distant Star System

WASP-13 is a star located 742 light-years from Earth. It is 5 billion years old and has a mass of 1.22 solar masses and a radius of 1.66 solar radii, both larger than the Sun's corresponding values. Its temperature is 5830 K. One planet orbits this star.

That planet, WASP-13 b, is a Jupiter-like world, a size class that exceeds 4 times Earth's radius. It was discovered by transit in 2009, when it passed in front of its star from our viewpoint and caused a small dip in observed brightness. Its radius is 13.7 Earth radii, larger than Earth's, and its mass is 114 Earth masses, also larger than Earth's. An orbital period is the time a planet takes to complete one orbit; WASP-13 b's orbital period is 4.35 days, and its mean density is 0.247 g/cm³, 0.0447 times Earth's.
