TOI-4940 b: A Giant World Around a Sun-Like Star

TOI-4940 is a G8 V star, a Sun-like dwarf, located 1130 light-years away. The star is 9.8 billion years old and has a mass of 1.01 solar masses, a radius of 1.16 solar radii, and a temperature of 5500 K. Its reported radius estimate is larger than the Sun's, while its reported temperature is cooler than the Sun's. One planet is known to orbit this star.

TOI-4940 b is a Jupiter-like planet discovered by the transit method in 2025. A transit occurs when a planet passes in front of its star from our viewpoint, causing a small dip in observed brightness. The planet has a reported upper limit of 89 Earth masses and a radius of 6.61 Earth radii, which is larger than Earth's. Because a Jupiter-like planet exceeds four times Earth's radius, that classification rests on the planet's size rather than its composition. TOI-4940 b completes one orbit in 25.9 days.
