TOI-3912: A Distant Star With a Close-Orbiting Giant

TOI-3912 is a star 1520 light-years away with an age of 7.5 billion years. Its mass is 1.09 solar masses and its radius is 1.39 solar radii, making both its reported mass and radius estimates larger than the Sun's. The star's temperature is 5730 K. One planet orbits this host.

That planet, TOI-3912 b, was discovered in 2023 by the transit method, in which a planet passes in front of its star from our viewpoint and causes a small dip in observed brightness. Repeated dips help establish orbital periods. TOI-3912 b completes an orbit every 3.49 days. It is a Jupiter-like planet, a class defined by radius exceeding 4 times Earth's. Its radius is 14.3 Earth radii, larger than Earth's, and its mass is 129 Earth masses, also larger than Earth's. Its mean density is 0.244 g/cm³, 0.0443 times Earth's.
