TOI-172 and Its Jupiter-Like Planet

TOI-172 is a star 1120 light-years away, and its mass is 1.13 solar masses, its radius is 1.78 solar radii, and its temperature is 5650 K. Its reported mass and radius estimates are larger than the Sun's, while its reported temperature is cooler than the Sun's. The star's age is 7.4 billion years. One planet is known to orbit TOI-172.

That planet, TOI-172 b, was discovered in 2019 by the transit method, in which a planet passes in front of its star from our viewpoint and causes a small dip in observed brightness. Repeated dips help establish orbital periods. TOI-172 b is a Jupiter-like planet, a size class for planets exceeding 4 times Earth's radius. Its radius is 10.8 Earth radii, larger than Earth's, and its mass is 1720 Earth masses, also larger than Earth's and roughly 5.42 times Jupiter's mass. Its mean density is 7.5 g/cm³, 1.36 times Earth's. It completes an orbit every 9.48 days.
