Kepler-587 and Its Super-Earth

Kepler-587 is a star located 2570 light-years from Earth, and it hosts one known planet. The star is 4.79 billion years old and has a mass of 0.92 solar masses, a radius of 0.89 solar radii, and a temperature of 5550 K.

The planet, Kepler-587 b, was discovered in 2016 by the transit method, in which a planet passes in front of its star from our viewpoint and causes a small dip in observed brightness. It completes an orbit every 10.9 days. With a radius of 2.23 Earth radii, it is classified as a Super-Earth, a size class that reaches 2.5 times Earth's radius. Its reported radius estimate is larger than Earth's, and the star's reported temperature is cooler than the Sun's.
