Kepler-538: A Cooler, Smaller Star with a Super-Earth

Kepler-538 is a star located 509 light-years away, and one planet orbits it. The host star is estimated to be 5.3 billion years old, with a mass of 0.892 solar masses and a radius of 0.872 solar radii. Its reported temperature is 5550 K, cooler than the Sun's, while its mass and radius estimates are both smaller than the Sun's.

The planet Kepler-538 b is classified as a Super-Earth, a size class that reaches up to 2.5 times Earth's radius. It was discovered in 2016 by the transit method, which detects the small dip in a star's brightness when a planet passes in front of it. The planet's radius is 2.22 Earth radii, larger than Earth's, and its mass is 12.9 Earth masses, also larger than Earth's. Its mean density is 6.54 g/cm³, 1.19 times Earth's. Kepler-538 b completes one orbit every 81.7 days.
