Kepler-442 and Its Earth-Like Planet

Kepler-442 is a star 1190 light-years away with one known planet. The host star is 2.9 billion years old, has a mass of 0.609 solar masses, a radius of 0.598 solar radii, and a temperature of 4400 K. Its reported mass estimate is smaller than the Sun's, its reported radius estimate is smaller than the Sun's, and its reported temperature is cooler than the Sun's.

The planet Kepler-442 b was discovered in 2015 by the transit method, in which a planet passes in front of its star from our viewpoint and causes a small dip in observed brightness. Repeated dips help establish orbital periods. Kepler-442 b is classified as Earth-like, a size class that stays within 1.5 times Earth's radius. It orbits every 112 days and has a radius of 1.34 Earth radii, a reported radius estimate larger than Earth's.
