Kepler-4 is a star 1590 light-years away with one known planet. The host star is 4.5 billion years old and has a mass of 1.22 solar masses, a radius of 1.49 solar radii, and a temperature of 5860 K. Its reported mass and radius estimates are both larger than the Sun's.
The one known planet is Kepler-4 b, a Jupiter-like world discovered by transit in 2009. Its transit reveals an orbital period of 3.21 days. Kepler-4 b has a mass of 24.5 Earth masses and a radius of 4 Earth radii, both larger than Earth's. Its mean density is 2.1 g/cm³, 0.382 times Earth's.
A transit occurs when a planet passes in front of its star from our viewpoint, causing a small dip in observed brightness. Repeated dips help establish orbital periods. Kepler-4 b's size class compares its radius with Earth's: a Jupiter-like planet exceeds 4 times Earth's radius.
